Mission: To Heal the World

Bryan Maddox

Head Trainer

I grew up in a household that was full of mixed messages. I spent most of my life in pursuit of a better approach to moving through my world without doing damage. When I became a teacher, I started learning about skills that I could use to navigate chaos in a healthy way. I taught these skills to my students and realized that this is something that the whole world could benefit from. When I retired I decided to spread the message that I used to have on the wall of my classroom: If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got (Henry Ford). If how you move through your world is not working for you, change your approach.

What is Kairos?

Kairos: A propitious moment for decision or action. The word Kairos is a reference to the measure of time in the present which flows. This can be an activity such as spending time with a loved one in which you lose track of time. While in this measure of time, healing can occur.

I started these trainings as a way to provide skills to promote the healing journey. It is important to me to serve those who serve as well.

Ten years ago I journeyed for 16 days down a river with Bryan and as we floated I shared a deep concern of losing the relationship with my wife, primarily because we seemed unable to communicate and constantly in a state of strife. On that trip Bryan convinced me to attend the program (Kairos) he and (name of partner) developed and that he claimed provided the life skills for healing relationships. I’ve never found counseling all that helpful, but I took a chance and the 3-day training transformed the way I approach relationships with my wife and family, work colleagues, and even myself. I believe the course helped save my marriage but like many newly attained accomplishments, skills fade with time unless reinforced. Thus I am thrilled to see Bryan write this book. In it he provides access to the important lessons offered in his course and compiles new research and seeming disparate topics into a coherent and important message about how to get along with people. As far as I’m concerned, it’s a must read for humanity. Bryan is a gifted writer and story-teller and makes his insight and research accessible and entertaining. This book deserves space on your bookshelf and will be one of those that becomes worn and tattered because of constant use.

I got to know Bryan while taking turns applying a sledgehammer to a large rock, helping a good friend who had a tragic accident make his home wheelchair accessible. Little did Bryan know, as I smiled under the dirt and sweat of a honest day’s work, I was chipping away at large rock of my own. At that time, I was taking a break (a sabbatical) from my successful career, trying to put some emotional, family, and spiritual balance back in to my chaotic life (the proverbial work/life balance). Sometimes the universe works in not-so-mysterious ways. Bryan extended an invitation to attend one of his workshops. I have been through countless professional trainings in my career but this was the most life-changing and exactly what I needed. Back at work again, I review and practice the skills I learned in this program every day, they have become a key to unlock happiness for me and are helping me find balance. While far from the end of my healing journey, I feel like I am on the right path. Bryan, I am grateful for you. Thank you.

When reflecting back on the personal growth I’ve experienced from attending HAP training with Bryan, my heart is filled with gratitude. Bryan is clear with his purpose and boundaries he naturally creates space for those in his presence to show up exactly how they are. I walked away from my experience in Bryan’s class understanding that I cannot control others, what I can control is myself and how I show up in the world. What a gift. You have touched my heart and soul and helped to make me a better human in this world and for that I am deeply grateful. With love.
